Ships and boats have developed alongside mankind. In armed conflict and in daily life they have become an integral part of modern commercial and military systems. Fishing boats are used by millions of fishermen throughout the world. Military forces operate vessels for combat and to transport and support forces ashore. Commercial vessels, nearly 35,000 in number, carried 7.4 billion tons of cargo in 2007.
Ships were key in history's great explorations and scientific and technological development. Navigators such as Zheng He spread such inventions as the compass and gunpowder. Ships have been used for such purposes as colonization and the slave trade, and have served scientific, cultural, and humanitarian needs. After the 16th century, new crops that had come from and to the Americas via the European seafarers significantly contributed to the world's population growth. Maritime transport has shaped the world's economy into today's energy-intensive pattern.

Chinese ferry sinks in Yangtze river: Tornado hits Eastern Star cruise ship carrying 458 people
Boat with more than 450 people sinks in China's Yangtze

BEIJING, June 2 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Xi Jinping has made an important instruction, ordering all-out rescue efforts following the accident in which a passenger ship carrying 458 people sank Monday night in the Hubei section of China's Yangtze River.
Premier Li Keqiang is heading to Hubei Province to direct the rescue work.
The Xinhua news agency reports that Chinese president Xi Jinping has issued an order for “all-out rescue efforts” while Premier Li Keqiang ordered a work team from the state council, China’s cabinet, to direct search-and-rescue work.
Efforts have faced difficulty due to bad weather, Xinhua said.
Li, along with vice-premier Ma Kai and state councilor Yang Jing are on their way to the site of the sinking.
Xi has ordered the provinces of Hubei and Chongqing to join in the rescue efforts and, Xinhua reports, “properly handle the aftermath”.
China’s transport ministry and other government departments were also told to throw all available resources into the rescue effort and for the treatment of those saved, Xinhua said.
Xi has also called for officials to heed lessons and take more effective measures to protect people’s lives, Xinhua said.
BEIJING – A small cruise ship carrying more than 450 people, many of them elderly, sank overnight in the Yangtze River during a storm in southern China, and eight people have been rescued, the state broadcaster CCTV reported Tuesday.
Rescue work was underway but low visibility due to fog was hampering the search, CCTV said. The boat was traveling from Nanjing upstream to the southwestern city of Chongqing when it sank Monday night in Hubei province, the report said.
The official Xinhua News Agency quoted the captain and chief engineer, who were both rescued, as saying the ship sank quickly after being caught in a cyclone. The Communist Party-run People's Daily said the ship sank within two minutes.
CCTV said the four-level ship was carrying 406 Chinese passengers, five travel agency employees and 47 crew members. It sank in the Damazhou waterway section, where the river is 15 meters (about 50 feet) deep.
The broadcaster said most of the passengers were 50 to 80 years of age.
CCTV video footage of the river showed calm waters Tuesday morning, with dozens of rescue personnel in bright orange vests gathered on the shore. Several rescue ships were searching the waters, and submersible craft had been deployed.
The channel said seven of the survivors swam to shore and alerted authorities of the sinking.
The Eastern Star measured 251 feet long (76.5 meters) and 36 feet wide (11 meters) and was capable of carrying a maximum of 534 people, CCTV reported. It is owned by the Chongqing Eastern Shipping Corp., which focuses on tourism routes in the popular Three Gorges river canyon region.
CCTV reported that 6 inches (150 millimeters) of rain had fallen in the region over the past 24 hours.
Chinese Premier Li Keqiang is reported to be traveling to the accident site. Xinhua reported that President Xi Jinping had ordered a work team of the State Council, the country's Cabinet, to rush to the site to guide the rescue work.

3D还原长江客轮倾覆经过 Chinese cruise ship sinks in Yangtze river
JIANLI COUNTY, CHINA — Chinese officials began an operation to right a capsized tour ship in the Yangtze River at 8:00 p.m. (1200 GMT) on Thursday.
The ship overturned during what Chinese weather officials are calling a freak tornado on Monday night. Fourteen survivors were rescued the day of the capsize, since then 75 more dead bodies have been recovered while over 370 passengers remain missing, Reuters reports. Among those rescued is the captain of the ship, who has been detained for questioning.
Submerged vessels are usually left undisturbed if survivors are believed to be inside, as movement of the ship may risk disturbing air pockets, said Alan Loynd, managing director of Hong Kong-based Branscombe Marine Consultants, which specializes in salvage operations, as reported by the Wall Street Journal. Air pockets are areas of air which could allow people to survive "for quite some time".
The transport ministry said righting the ship will allow rescuers to search for missing people more efficiently and protect the dignity of the deceased, Xinhua News Agency reported.
Yangtze River authorities have also ordered Chongqing Eastern Shipping Corp., the owner of the Eastern Star, to suspend operations of its sister vessel, the Eastern Pearl. The company has been ordered to carry out a comprehensive investigation of the rest of its fleet, Xinhua reported. The Eastern Pearl has the same design as the Eastern Star.

China Cruise Ship Sinks in Yangtze River After Tornado - 457 People Missing
China Cruise Ship Sinks in Yangtze River After Tornado - 457 People Missing: More than 400 people are missing after a Chinese passenger boat sank on the Yangtze river after being hit by what the captain described as a cyclone.
At least 458 people were travelling on the Dongfangzhixing, or Eastern Star, vessel when it went down at around 11pm on Monday night not far from the city of Jingzhou in Hubei province.
By Tuesday morning, local reports said 30 people had been rescued with heavy rain and strong winds hindering the work of emergency teams.
China’s prime minister, Li Keqiang, was heading to the scene of the disaster “to lead the rescue effort”, according to local media.
The president, Xi Jinping, ordered an “all-out” search and rescue effort as China braced itself for a major disaster.
Eastern Star had been travelling from Nanjing, the capital of Jiangsu province, to the south-western city of Chongqing when the incident happened, according to Xinhua, China’s official news agency.
After encountering extreme weather conditions that crew members described as a cyclone the ship “sank quickly”.
Initial reports said there were 405 Chinese passengers, five travel agency employees and 47 crew members on the ship.
Most of the passengers were aged between 50 and 80, the Hubei Daily newspaper reported.
The People’s Daily, the Communist party’s official newspaper, published a photograph of a vessel that is similar to the Eastern Star and is operated by the same boat operator on its Twitter account.
The Eastern Star was 251 feet long, 36 feet wide and had could carry 534 people, the newspaper added.
On Tuesday morning, its wreckage was around 15 metres beneath the surface of the river, the Hubei Daily added.

Rescue efforts continue around a capsized cruise ship on China's Yangtze River. The death toll could make it the worst maritime disaster in recent memory. More than 400 passengers and crew are unaccounted for.
The ship, named the Eastern Star, sank Monday night during a thunderstorm. Rescuers confirmed 15 survivors so far, including the captain and chief engineer, who were detained for questioning.
The captain said that a cyclone quickly sank the ship. The Eastern Star was carrying more than 450 people, most of them elderly, some of whom were sleeping at the time. (Video via CCTV)
The ship was en route to the Three Gorges Dam, a popular tourist destination and the largest hydroelectric project in the world.
Cruise tourism on the Yangtze, the world's third-longest river, has ballooned in the past decade but deflated in recent years. Ships like the Eastern Star slashed their rates to attract demand — passengers aboard the ship paid just $160 for a 13-day trip. (Video via Gate 1 Travel)
Before Monday's capsizing, Yangtze cruises were expected to attract more than 1 million passengers this year. China's premier, Li Keqiang, arrived Tuesday to coordinate the thousands of rescuers. (Video via BBC)
Continuing bad weather hampered rescuers Tuesday morning. Some survivors were pulled from underneath the ship's overturned hull; another survivor escaped through a window and swam to shore as the ship sank.
The Chinese government hasn't issued an official list of passengers on the ship, which has drawn protests from grieving families. The death toll might exceed that of Asia's last passenger ship disaster, when 304 people drowned on the capsized Sewol ferry in South Korea last April.

Video Footage Records Rescue of Senior Passenger Aboard Capsized Ship
A newly released video footage recorded the moment a 65-year-old passenger on Tuesday was pulled live out of water by rescuers onto the capsized hull of the passenger ship that sank in the Yangtze River on Monday night.
Three divers went 15 meters under water several times to search for passengers trapped inside the overturned ship. And they found the passenger near the ship's bow. After being rescued, the female passenger was immediately sent to hospital.
The Changjiang Water Resources Commission of the Ministry of Water Resources reduced the water discharge flow of the Three Gorges Reservoir three times on Tuesday morning, from 17,200 cubic meters down to 7,000 cubic meters per second, though the water level on the Yangtze River kept rising in recent days due to continuous rains.
The reduced flow is expected to show effect at the Jianli (Hubei Province) section of the Yangtze River on Tuesday evening.
The ship, which departed from the eastern Chinese city of Nanjing for Chongqing Municipality in southwest China, sank "within one or two minutes" after being caught in a cyclone, according to the ship's captain and chief engineer.
The accident occurred at 21:28 Monday in the Jianli (Hubei Province) section of the Yangtze, China's longest river, according to the Yangtze River navigation administration.
Maritime authorities said most of the passengers are elderly people who signed up on a travel tour in Shanghai.
The ship was carrying 406 passengers, five travel agency workers and 47 crew members.
Nineteen of the 458 people on board the capsized ship had been rescued as of 15:10 on Tuesday, according to the Maritime Search and Rescue Center.
The ship's captain and chief engineer, who have been rescued, are now under police custody.
An investigation has found that the ship was not overloaded and was equipped with sufficient life jackets. All those rescued were wearing life jackets, said the ministry.
Bad weather is hampering the rescue operation, and the top priority is to turn the capsized vessel upright, it said.

Title: Roughly 800 people quarantined as MERS spreads in Korea
Once again our starting point is the fast spreading Middle East Respiratory Syndrome, or MERS, outbreak, which has Korea on edge.
Today, the country reported its first two deaths from the virus, while six new cases have emerged,... bringing the total confirmed infections to 25.
We connect to our Kim Hyun-bin at the news center for the latest.
Hyun-bin, what have officials revealed about these two deaths?
Health authorities are on high alert.
As you noted, Korea′s health ministry reported the country′s first TWO deaths from the virus earlier today.
The first was a 58-year-old woman who died Monday.
She was initially hospitalized for severe asthma, but doctors say... her condition worsened after she came into close contact with the first confirmed MERS patient at the same hospital.
She was only suspected of having the virus,... but testing after her death confirmed its presence.
The second person to die from MERS was a 71-year-old man he was known to be the sixth MERS patient.
He was receiving treatment in an isolation ward after contracting the disease from the first patient.
Now... six more people have tested positive Tuesday... for MERS.
But what′s even more alarming is... two of them were found to have tertiary infections, meaning they contracted the virus from a SECONDARY infected patient.
Korea′s health ministry says it′s possible that more tertiary patients could pop up in the next few days.
Meanwhile, 800 people who had contact with MERS patients... are under home isolation or in quarantine facilities to prevent the disease from spreading further.
The MERS situation exploded in a relatively short period of time...
Just as concerning as the virus itself is how some false rumors about the virus sparked... and stirred public confusion.
What is being done to address this issue?
Well, the Korean government says it′s going to do more to make sure that clear and accurate information is given to the public.
Let′s hear what health minister had to say in the latest public update.
"The virus is not airborne it could only infect through contact such as saliva, and phlegm..We will provide distinct characteristics of MERS so false rumors and strange stories could be cut off."
And in an effort to protect

In Chinese Ship Disaster, Death Toll, Questions Mount
Nearly three days after a river cruise ship with hundreds of passengers capsized on China’s Yangtze River, the death toll is mounting and questions remain about what happened that fateful Monday night. Meanwhile, the government is stepping up measures to limit damage to its reputation from what could be the country’s worst maritime disaster in decades.
State media have kept their focus largely on the rescue effort, even as the hope of finding any more survivors has become increasingly slim. Of the 456 people on the Eastern Star, only 14 had been rescued as of Thursday, when the confirmed death toll rose to 75. Most people aboard were touris

The cruise along the Yangtze River was supposed to be a special one for Yang Yunlou and his wife, Chen Cailian, who were traveling with their 7-year-old granddaughter, Chenlin, visiting historic sites along a route that was carrying them west, toward the enormous Three Gorges Dam.
The couple, both in their 60s, had paid for a first-class cabin on the huge cruise ship, the Oriental Star. At 9:05 p.m. Monday, they spoke by cellphone with relatives back home in Shanghai, and everything seemed fine. Nothing was said about the weather or the rain showers in the area.
But less than 25 minutes later, a violent storm capsized the ship. Of the 456 p

Chinese authorities began on Thursday to right the cruise ship , after divers sent to search for survivors found no signs of life inside.

The mission has now become an operation to recover hundreds of bodies.
"In a situation in which the overall judgment is that there is no chance of people being alive, we could start the work of righting the boat," Transport Ministry spokesman Xu Chengguang told a news conference.
State broadcaster CCTV announced on Friday morning that the boat had been righted, and that teams would still try to lift the vessel even though the water inside it was weighing it down.
Mr Xu said earlier that the operation would involve divers putting steel bars underneath the ship, which would then be lifted by two 500-tonne cranes.
A huge net was placed near the cranes and another one a few metres downstream to catch any bodies.
Two smaller cranes were also on site and boats were stopped from entering the area.
Some of the 14 people who survived the disaster jumped from the ship during the early moments and swam ashore.
Three of them were pulled by divers from air pockets inside the overturned hull on Tuesday after rescuers heard yells for help coming from inside.
On Thursday, rescuers had cut three holes into the overturned hull in unsuccessful attempts to find more survivors.
More than 200 divers have worked underwater in three shifts to search the ship's cabins one by one, state broadcaster CCTV said.
The bodies pulled out on Thursday were taken to Jianli's Rongcheng Crematorium, in Hubei province, where relatives tried to identify them.
Records from a maritime agency show the capsized ship was cited for safety violations two years ago. Authorities in Nanjing held the ship after it violated standards during a safety inspection campaign in 2013, according to a report on the city's Maritime Safety website, which did not specify the violations.
The shallow-draft boat, which was not designed to withstand winds as heavy as an ocean-going vessel can, overturned in what Chinese weather authorities have called a cyclone with winds up to 130km (80m) per hour.

Righting of Capsized Ship Goes on Quicker Than Expected
The righting progress of a capsized cruise ship on Yangtze River goes on more smoothly than expected on Friday morning.
The 2,200-ton-"Eastern Star", which capsized on Monday night has now been turned over for 90 degrees. Its blue and white ship body now can be seen in the river.
Rescuers say a heavy fog at around 06:00 Friday hampered their righting progress. They had to wait for better visibility.
The fog dispersed one hour later and the righting progress started at 07:10. The progress went on quite smoothly.
Now rescuers are adjusting the steel cables so they can lift the ship out of water successfully just on their first attempt, to show their respect for those deceased.
Two crane ships, each having a lifting capacity of 500 tons will lift the cruise ship after the cables were in place.
The whole adjusting progress will last for some time due to strong wind.
The righting progress actually started last night, when divers began to try to tie steel cables onto the boat. All the four cables were tied onto the ship at around 04:00 Friday morning.
As of Friday, 14 were saved, 82 bodies were found.
The Eastern Star disaster in the Yangtze River could become China's deadliest shipping accident in almost seven decades. Over 450 people were on board when it overturned on Monday night after being hit by a tornado in Jianli County, Hubei Province, central China.

STORY: Rescue efforts continued on Thursday (June 4) at the site of a sunken cruise ship on the Yangtze River, which has left 75 people dead and over 370 missing.
Rescuers cut holes into the upturned hull of the Eastern Star in an attempt to recover victims still within its bowels, though the chances of finding further survivors have all but disappeared.
Only 14 survivors, including the captain and chief engineer, have been found since the ship carrying 456 people capsized.
Authorities are investigating the crew members who were rescued from the Eastern Star, which capsized in a freak tornado on Monday (June 1) night, and were "gathering evidence", Xu Chengguang, the spokesman for the Ministry of Transport, said.
Police have detained the captain and chief engineer for questioning. An initial investigation found the ship was not overloaded and had enough life vests on board.
The ship had been on an 11-day voyage upstream from Nanjing, near Shanghai, to Chongqing.

Most people aboard were tourists over age 60.
Several interviews with some of the survivors have been played and replayed in recent days on state-run television. But little has been said about weather conditions prior to the accident or what the survivors’ thought had happened to the ship.
The official account so far has been that an extreme weather front and tornado was largely to blame for the ship’s capsizing. Little attention has been given to the possibility that human error could have played a role.
Chinese authorities on Thursday morning began trying to right the capsized ship, a measure that may yield answers. The French news agency AFP reported that inclement weather interfered with the operation, but workers were able to weld hooks onto the hull for use in lifting it later.
Questions suppressed
Questions about the ship’s safety record and the captain have been quickly shut down online and on social media.
On the website Freeweibo.com, the Eastern Star was a top-trending censored topic. Some censored posts ranted about the slow pace of the rescue effort. Others wondered how it was that the captain had time to escape, but not enough time to send out a rescue signal.
On the popular WeChat social media service, some stories were censored. One article on the newsfeed of Beijing’s popular Xinjing newspaper that appeared to be a collection of questions was blocked. The title, which was still visible, read: "Things we would like to know about the sinking of the Eastern Star on the Yangtze River. Why was there not any warning for the tornado? Why was the incident not reported to police until two hours after it occurred?"
When clicking on the link, a page pops up claiming it had been removed because of complaints about its content.
China’s Communist Party-backed People’s Daily newspaper has thrown its support behind the ship’s captain, Zhang Shunwen, noting he has 35 years of experience and has been in charge of the ship since 2008. The report also added that Zhang's wife was on board the ship and that her fate is still uncertain.
Investigation promised
Press briefings held by officials have largely worked to reconfirm the official narrative of the incident, giving long lists of numbers of the ships and divers involved in the rescue effort. They have also backed up the theory that a rare but powerful tornado likely caused the ship to capsize.
On Thursday, in an apparent response to protests by family members in Shanghai and at the site of the accident, authorities pledged at a daily briefing to step up efforts to meet the needs of families providing them with lodging near the site and psychological counseling. Officials say that more than 1,200 family members of those on board the ship are in the town of Jianli, where the ship overturned.
Officials have said they will investigate both the captain of the ship and its chief engineer. Transportation Ministry spokesman Xu Chengguang told reporters Thursday that the government would "never shield any mistakes and absolutely not cover up" anything in their investigation.
A preliminary investigation has already begun, officials said. The Communist Party’s Politburo Standing Committee also called for a “serious investigation into the cause of the accident,” according to a Xinhua report.

Families' frustrated over the rescue effort of the Yangtze River disaster
Of the 456 passengers, only 14 are believed to have survived, including the captain. One of the survivors said he swam until dawn.

What We Know
The Oriental Star capsized near the town of Jianli with 456 people aboard.
Only 14 survivors have been found. By Thursday evening, 77 bodies were recovered, according to CCTV.
Before the accident, a local maritime bureau sent a warning of heavy rain and thunderstorms.
The Oriental Star was one of six vessels cited in 2013 for unspecified violations.
What We Don’t Know
The official cause of the accident and the ship’s safety record.
The ship’s seaworthiness, including whether modifications to the hull made it more susceptible to capsizing.
Whether the Oriental Star received the storm alert, and if so, why the captain continued sailing when at least two other vessels dropped their anchors.
How the ship’s captain escaped and whether he had radioed for help, warned passengers to don life vests or ordered an evacuation.
The confirmed death toll increased to 77 on Thursday, according to China Central Television, and about 1,200 family members have arrived in Jianli County, where the accident occurred, officials said.
In all, 442 people are presumed dead, including Mr. Yang, Ms. Chen and their granddaughter, one of the youngest passengers on a ship that was filled mostly with retirees in their 60s and 70s. It is one of the worst maritime accidents in Asia in decades.
“Yesterday was children’s day, and today, I have no idea whether my child is alive or not,” Tang Xia, the girl’s mother, said, sobbing Tuesday afternoon at a local government bureau where parents had gathered hoping for word about their loved ones. “I’m waiting desperately for any updates, or any official who can talk with me.”
Many families are still hoping that, by some miracle, someone will be found alive.
The government has not released an official passenger list of those aboard the Oriental Star, nor has the cruise ship operator, the Chongqing Oriental Ferry Company, although various websites have published what purport to be passenger lists.
Families have expressed anger and frustration at the slow response from the government, the ship operator and the travel agencies involved, with some of them saying they have not been formally contacted or informed about the investigation.
In a sign of the high-level attention being focused on the disaster, President Xi Jinping held a meeting on Thursday of the Politburo Standing Committee, the highest echelon of political power in China, to discuss the rescue efforts. It found them satisfactory.
“In handling the response to this emergency, related aspects reacted with urgency, provided orderly assistance and took efficient steps,” the committee said, according to a summary from the official Xinhua news

“In handling the response to this emergency, related aspects reacted with urgency, provided orderly assistance and took efficient steps,” the committee said, according to a summary from the official Xinhua news

China suspends rescue, begins righting capsized ship in Yangtze River - TomoNews

The Latest on China Boat Sinking: Rescuers Hear Survivors
Chinese state media say that at least one person is dead and nearly 450 are missing after the ship sank. Ten people have been rescued, according to state broadcaster CCTV, which said the four-level ship was carrying 406 Chinese passengers, five travel agency employees and 47 crew members. Most of the passengers were 50 to 80 years of age.
Chinese President Xi Jinping orders all our rescue effort after the passenger ship carrying 458 passengers and crew sank late Monday night in the Hubei section of China's Yangtze River. He has ordered a work team from the State Council, the country's Cabinet, to rush to the site to guide the rescue work. The ship, the Eastern Star, sank after being caught in a cyclone while steaming upriver in a section of the river in Hubei province, according to the Yangtze River navigation administration.

'No Chance' To Find Survivors As Ship Righted
Rescue teams have finished righting a Chinese cruise ship that capsized on the Yangtze River but officials said there was no chance of finding anyone alive.
So far, 97 bodies have been recovered from the Eastern Star disaster.
Chinese authorities began on Thursday to right the cruise ship , after divers sent to search for survivors found no signs of life inside.
Only 14 survivors, including the captain and chief engineer, have been found since the ship carrying 456 people overturned during a freak tornado on Monday night.

Yangtze cruise ship capsized: Death toll climbs to 82
The death toll from a Chinese cruise ship that capsized on the Yangtze River has climbed to
82, state media said on Friday, as authorities righted the battered vessel and said there
was no chance of finding anyone else alive.
The rescue mission has become an operation to recover hundreds of bodies from the ship,
which was carrying 456 people when it overturned in a freak tornado on Monday night. Only
14 survivors have been found, including the captain."In a situation in which the overall
judgement is that there is no chance of people being alive, we could start the work of
righting the boat," transport ministry spokesman Xu Chengguang told a news conference late
on Thursday.

The rescue mission has become an operation to recover hundreds of bodies from the ship, which was carrying 456 people when it overturned in a freak tornado on Monday night. More than 200 divers have groped through murky water after cutting through the hull, searching every cabin on board, but have found no more survivors.
Some family members have expressed anger at the scarcity of information, and many have come to Jianli county in Hubei province where the incident happened.

Capsized Ship Turned over
The Capsized cruise ship on the Yangtze River has been turned over, with the ship top showing above the water.
The 2,200-ton-"Eastern Star" which was carrying 456 passengers sank on Monday night after being hit by a tornado in Jianli County, Hubei Province, central China.
The righting operation started at 07:20 Friday after two huge cranes each with a lifting capacity of 500 tons prepared overnight for the delicate task.
So far, 14 people have survived and 82 bodies have been found.
The Eastern Star disaster in the Yangtze River could become China's deadliest shipping accident in almost seven decades.
